Dear Friend, Show Delhi’s wastepickers your support! After all, they recycle your trash! As part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Chintan along with Safai Sena, and with the support of activist Shazia Ilmi, will voice their support and share their contribution towards making Delhi Swachh. Over 300 waste pickers will participate. Here is why wastepickers, kabaris and recyclers matter for a Swachh Bharat • There are over 150,000 people in Delhi involved in recycling through collection, segregation etc. • They recycle 20% of your waste • They save 3.6 times more greenhouse gases than any project in India that gets carbon credits • Your waste is a tool to fight poverty-their livelihoods help them feed themselves and send their children to school. • If they are not recognized, they continue to be treated like the trash they pick. They are asked to pay bribes just to work, and suffer many injuries. The event will start at 3.15 pm with a message and announcement by Shazia Ilmi. Various others, including the wastepickers themselves, will also speak and describe how they will contribute to this Abhiyan. Following this, the wastepickers will speak to the public, pinning green ribbons on them and motivating them by offering them a printed message and speaking to them.
