Dear Friends, At our last meeting Sept 3, neighbors paid a visit to Ald. Daniel Solis’s ward night to ask him about $11 million sitting on the Pilsen TIF. Although they didn’t find him, his staff agreed to arrange a meeting that turned into three meetings. Come to the next Pilsen Alliance community meeting to get a full report and share your input on what’s pending. Thursday October 3, 6 PM Rudy Lozano Library 18th and Jeff Loomis So far, Ald. Solis has committed to: •Support a moratorium on charter schools for the 25th ward, not the rest of the city •Deny any public buildings or funds to charter operators in the 25th ward •Continue to support the use of the city-wide TIF surplus on public schools Ald. Solis does not support: • Citywide charter school moratorium • A democratically elected school board On a written list of commitments, Ald. Solis’s also agreed to "consider initiating a conversation regarding a moratorium of charter schools in City Council,” as opposed to burying such a discussion in a committee. One of the pending matters is the construction of a metal shredder being proposed across from Benito Juarez H.S. A month ago, the new shredder seemed like a done deal in the Zoning Board of Appeals. But when Pilsen Alliance and others started asking questions, the zoning permit hearing was rescheduled for October 18th. At the meeting this Thursday, we will be reporting about conversations with the shredder operator, Pure Metal, and next steps. Come to Thursday and be a part of the future of Pilsen.
