Dear Friends, In the past few days, immediately following media reports of the devastation caused by typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, particularly in Tacloban City, many of you contacted us to ask how you can donate funds for the relief efforts in the island of Leyte. If you wish to make a donation to the general relief efforts, we recommend that you make the contribution online at the Canadian Red Cross. The government will make a dollar-for-dollar match to donations received until 8 December. Many of you have also expressed the desire to make direct donations to us knowing that we come from Leyte. After a quick meeting to determine how best to receive these donations, and the most effective way of sending your help to our town, we would like to accept your offer of help by: 1. If these options are not convenient for you, please call us at (705) 761-2244 or (705) 761-3761 The four of us (Carmela Valles, Dindin Villarino, Georgina Arcilla and Nieva Tumbiga) come from the town of San Isidro, 95 km northwest of Tacloban City. From those who managed to take a boat to Cebu, another island in Central Visayas, we obtained reports that the damage to our town is in a scale that we have never seen or experienced before. The photos that they sent us are heartbreaking. As we are located on the northern tip of the island, and with major roads and bridges destroyed, our town has remained isolated. The magnitude of need is immense and the number of people in need is vast. We will gratefully take your offer of support and direct it to the needs of the people in our hometown. We will provide you with a full report of your donation to ensure transparency and to honour your trust. In the next few months, we will also be sending boxes of clothing and canned goods.
