Dear Friends, I’m excited to announce the kickoff of our fundraising project which Bruce is calling “Rediscovering Ralph Chessé’s (1900-1991)Works on Paper.” Well be raising the money online through a fundraising platform called IncitED https://incited.org/en/projects/6756-Rediscovering--Ralph-Chesse-1900-1991 It’s a dedicated space for education-related fundraising. Bruce has some amazing incentives for different levels of Funding. On July 11–October 4, 2015 the Georgia Museum of Art, in Athens GA, will be presenting a retrospective exhibit of Ralph’s Chessés paintings. He is also know as Peters Uncle Ralph, one of the Coit Tower muralists and the talented puppeteer of TVs Brother Buzz. This project addresses a different aspect of Uncle Ralphs large output, his works on paper. Ralph was descended from a long line of civil rights activists who were Creoles or as they described themselves, Persons of Color. Several years ago the Detroit Institute of Arts, which had several of his works on paper and a complete production of his Emperor Jones play, recently transferred their collection of his puppets and works on paper over to the DIA’s General Motors Center for African American Art Collection. So he is now officially recognized as an African American Artist of color. Given that, it is interesting to note that the African American community in San Francisco and New Orleans, nor the general public, has ever had the opportunity to see a retrospective of his works on paper. It has always been a concern of Bruces that the people in New Orleans and San Francisco were cheated by not having an opportunity to see the range and diversity of what Ralph produced on a daily basis. He would like to correct this and bring an exhibition of his works on paper to several cities around the US and introduce this artist to all interested art lovers. Who will benefit? You will benefit. Get a glimpse of what a man was able to produce in a lifetime in a number of genres. Someone who never had a steady income until he was 56 , but thanks to a television program Brother Buzz in 1953 his world was to open up. Ralph then went to Europe and began painting and drawing non-stop. An artist to be successful needs to have his work seen and experienced. I am looking for an opportunity to do that for him and help others re-discover his greatest passion, his love of art. Our goal is to raise $ 7,800. Your generous support can make that goal attainable. Any contribution is appreciated and no amount will go unnoticed. The majority of the money raised will go towards conserving as much of his Works on Paper as is possible getting matted for mounting. There will be 34 pieces that can be easily loaded in a rolling case for easy transport to any venue. Please watch our project video and read more about what we’re doing by visiting the project. We will also be putting an announcement on Bruces Facebook page. “Like” the project on Facebook and share it with as many people as you can. Spreading the word is so important. We need to have as many people visiting the site on the first 3 days as it will motivate others to contribute. https://incited.org/en/projects/6756-Rediscovering--Ralph-Chesse-1900-1991 Thanks for your support in advance. #uncleralph Peter Albin, Karen Lyberger & Bruce Chesse
