Dear Friends─ On behalf of the National Endowment for the Humanities we would like to invite you to join them on March 12, at 6:00 pm for a special, one night only photography exhibition and at 6:30pm for a screening and discussion of the documentary Freedom Riders. The event will take at NYU’s DC campus in the Abramson Family Auditorium (1307 L Street, NW)—information on parking and local transportation here. The screening is part of NYU Washington DC’s celebration of Black History Month and NEH’s Created Equal initiative. Guests arriving at 6:00 pm can enjoy a catered reception as well. The Rebekah Jacob Gallery from Charleston, South Carolina will host the special, one night only exhibit featuring exclusive photos by Ernest Withers, Bruce Davidson, and Bob Adelman displayed throughout the building. The gallery owner, Rebekah Jacob, will discuss the history of the Civil Rights era photos with the guests. There will then be a screening of an excerpt from Freedom Riders by Stanley Nelson, which tells the story about the volunteers who participated in the Freedom Rides of 1961. The movement was made up of an incredibly diverse group of people who risked injury, arrest, and death to bring the fight against Jim Crow laws out of the courts and into the streets. The film features some stunning footage and photography of the movement and highlights how imagery can shape and galvanize a movement. After the film, at 7:00pm, they will have a panel discussion featuring Arun Chaudhary, the former White House videographer, Professor Deborah Willis, Smithsonian expert, Chris Wilson, and Rebekah Jacob, exploring the role photojournalism can have on shaping large movements and the effect that imagery has on our perceptions of a people. The discussion will be moderated by noted historian Gerald Early, a member of NEH’s National Council on the Humanities. Space is limited, register here: nyu.edu/rsvp/event.php?e_id=4709. The event is free to attend. Please visit the event’s website and see the attached flier for more details. If you have any questions please feel free to contact via email or at 202-208-7122.
