Dear Friends, Partners and Colleagues; This is to let you know - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends, Partners and Colleagues; This is to let you know that in November 2013; (after 3 years of inside struggle); I did some soul searching about the future of my career. I came to the conclusion that my time at WLSA had come to an end. I feel I have served WLSA the best way I can. I cannot offer more. I was employed in February 1998. By the time I was employed I had been a practicing lawyer at Sacranie and Gow and Company for two years. I had never done any research nor interacted at the global and regional and sub-regional level. WLSA taught me all that. In my time here at WLSA we have made history not once but many times. We spearheaded an amendment to the Employment act in 1999 so as to increase the maternity leave from 1 month to 3 months. We conceived, conceptualised, pushed for and eventually got enacted the Prevention of Domestic Violence, we provided technical support and advocated for the enactment of the Deceased Estate Administration Act. We implemented successful Rights Based Approach Programmes in Mulanje, Chikhwawa, Thyolo, Mwanza, Mangochi, and Nkhotakota. We have published the following: 1. Feminisation of HIV/AIDS in Malawi: Women’s Right to Life and Factors That Create Vulnerability to HIV Transmission. (2009) 2. Women And HIV/AIDS In Six Districts In Malawi: Balancing The Equation Between Grounded Realities And The Appropriateness Of The Response (2010) 3. In Search of Justice: Women and the Administration of Justice Delivery in Malawi (2000); 4. Dispossessing the Widow: Gender Based Violence in Malawi (2002) This is among so many papers that we have written and published around the world. WLSA was a place where I as a Feminist felt I was fully understood. I have travelled to over 30 countries since my time at WLSA and have met so many amazing people and all this has deepened my faith and belief in the women’s movement. The women’s movement is my home. I will die its loyal and devoted member. I leave WLSA happy for myself and hopeful for the movement here in Malawi. There is so much work still to be done. I know many women and men will continue with the work and new ones will come up and take up the mantle where I have left it. My last day of work is 31st July 2014. I have been working with Mzati Mbeko a Lawyer trained at chancellor. He has two professions under his belt. He is a teacher with a Bachelor of Education and a lawyer and now a gender expert. He has just completed a diploma in Gender and Development from Iceland where he has spent the last five months. He is a feminist and is committed to the advancement of women. Mzati and I have worked together for three years starting from the time he was a law student at the University of Malawi. He can be found at: [email protected] or mzati.mbeko@yahoo. My email remains: seodiwhite@hotmail Kindly note that this has NOTHING to do with my recent public appointment. The decision to leave WLSA was made last year. I was waiting for Mzati to come back from Iceland. Thank you and God bless.
