Dear Friends, Patrons and Members: Fresh from a rehearsal of The Royal Family at the Workshop, I found myself grinning ear-to-ear. It was even more fun than I expected... Great fun to watch the large cast of Workshop actors having such a good time impersonating and working to understand the ego driven thespians of an earlier era, the Cavendishes. Its an open secret that George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber based their rollicking comedy on that distinguished theatrical family, the Barrymores, the most famous members being Lionel, Ethel and John. (Drew is of a later generation.) So it was also fun speculating which of the preposterous events in the play actually occurred in real life. And it was touching to see how their towering egos and personality conflicts never interfered with the fierce loyalty all the volatile family members and their long-suffering servants held for one another. I hope youll be able to attend one of our Classic Night readings of this wonderful old play. The dates are this Friday and Saturday, June 6th and 7th, at 8, and Sunday, June 8th, at 3. We usually run Classic Nights one or two performances but we added a third this time around to try to maximize the opportunities to see it. Its an event theatre lovers wont want to miss. Theres no charge for seating which is first come, first served. If youd like to give a donation, I can assure you it will be gratefully accepted. Were looking forward to seeing you. Cheers, Chilton Ryan
