Dear Friends, Protecting the health and welfare of all Los - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends, Protecting the health and welfare of all Los Angeles residents has always been a top priority of mine. That is why I am proud to announce that as of January 7, 2014, all drilling at the Murphy Oil site has been stopped. After speaking with the heads of the Building & Safety and Planning departments, I successfully negotiated a temporary moratorium on all drilling at the location. I have also arranged for Safety Inspectors to visit the site twice a day to ensure that the drilling does not resume. I’ve also introduced a resolution in council, seconded by my colleagues Mike Bonin and Paul Koretz, requesting that the California Department of Conservation, California Environmental Protection Agency, South Coast Air Quality management District and the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, review and investigate the new oil production and oil drilling techniques utilized within the City of Los Angeles and report back to the Los Angeles City Council and the Mayor with their findings. I have spoken with representatives from the oil company who have agreed to meet with the community. My staff and I are now in the process of setting up a series of community meetings to allow residents to get answers from the company on the possibility of health risks and potential threats to the environment. We are partnering with members of the community, our neighborhood councils, Pastor Sauls of Holman Church, Congresswoman Karen Bass and Senator Holly Mitchell to organize these meetings.
