Yesterday I spent tap dancing, had a marathon run, ice skated, bought new shoes and went to a country line dance. Well, truth be told, I did these only in my head. I live in my stroke-affected life. Wait, I said that wrong. My body has the stroke still, but my life and mind are fully functional. I realized that last night, as I lay in my lay, unmoving, in my bed: This disease does not affect my mind at all; it only restricts my life if I let it. It is laziness if I refuse to use the bank of creative power in me to break free, to overrule my recent slide toward depression. This paralytic flesh-wrapped prison entraps me, only with my permission. Today I will not allow mysef to accept that emprisonment. Today I choose to live my life on my terms, unfettered. Today I am free.
