Dear Friends, Virgilio Gil Corpuz was dragged by more than 20 - TopicsExpress

Dear Friends, Virgilio Gil Corpuz was dragged by more than 20 police and military men from his home in Isabela last Jan. 4, 2013 and has been locked up in a remote mountain jail in Kiangan, Ifugao for the last ten months. Falsely accused of participating in a rebel ambush of Philippine soldiers by NPAs in Ifugao, he faces a long drawn trial and a possible life sentence. Contrary to his accusers statements, Corpuz is a regional coordinator of a land transport workers coalition, the PISTON - Cagayan Valley and a community development worker of the RDC Kaduami in Northern Luzon. He even works as a legislative researcher at the Isabela Provincial Council and contributes articles to the Northern Dispatch Weekly. As a transport worker unionist, he has been fearless in standing up against successive oil price hikes of giant oil companies and the states oppressive taxes, fines and fees exacted from the transport sector. Like the 27 other persons unjustly arrested during the Christmas season of 2012, the fabricated charges were clearly designed to silence him, this being a trend of escalating political persecution of leaders of progressive civil society organizations. Please help in the campaign to set them free. Read this petition and sign it. avaaz.org/en/petition/Stand_Up_for_Justice_Trade_Unionists_are_not_Criminals/
