Dear Friends, What is in my hearts mind today? Love: Love is the discretion to know what belongs to ones soul and what belongs to the soul of the other, and yet, making the conscious decision to allow what belongs to the other to enter into ones soul for their own sake. The Solomon Mary did this for Jesus of Nazareth in Rudolf Steiners Fifth Gospel. She listened to his painful words, knowing they were his but by allowing them to enter lovingly into her soul, and by feeling his pain, she enacted one of the greatest mysteries of our times. This listening allowed his own words to loosen the Zarathustra ego, in preparation for the baptism. Had this not occurred, there would not have been an epiphany! This is why Goethe calls true conversation a thing more precious than gold. When we listen without criticism, to the thoughts of another, we allow the loosening of the ego of the other, so that it can come to self knowledge and finally to epiphany. Discretion requires self knowledge, in other words, being conscious of what belongs to us in the conversation and what is instructive for the other. In other words, not taking personally what does not belong to our person. When we truly listen we make ourselves into a mirror, whose reflection can allow the other to become selfless - they empty the content of their souls into us, and when this content is reflected through the power of our love, it brings about self knowledge and self knowledge eventually leads to epiphany, or the unification of the soul with the spirit. This may not always happen straight away, in fact Jesus of Nazareth had to walk to his baptism and in those days of walking (some say 12) the ego of Zarathustra loosened more and more. During this walk, according to Rudolf Steiners Fifth Gospel, Jesus meets with the Essenes who give no importance to worldly things; with a man who has placed too much importance worldly things; and with a leper whose physical body is wasting away. These represent the imperfections encountered by the Zarathustra ego in the world which have entered into the thinking feeling and will of Jesus of Nazareth. Through his mothers listening these were loosened and stood before the Zarathustra ego as a form of self knowledge. Later, after the Baptism, it is because of these meetings, that Christ entering into the Nathan Soul is able to recognise the earthly workings of Lucifer and Ahriman in the human being. For never having existed in a physical body He had only known these beings in their cosmic aspects and was now encountering them for the first time in their microcosmic counterparts. Rudolf Steiner tells us that tit is through Discretion that we develop the power necessary for meditation. Why? Because one must be able to discern very clearly what belongs to the self in the spiritual world and what belongs to other beings if one is not to fall into illusions and delusions. This is the stage Rudolf Steiner calls - building the hut.
