Dear Friends and Readers, I mentioned this before but heres one last call! As you may or may not know, I’ve recently moved to New Zealand, where I’ve taken up an academic post as Associate Professor of Science Communication at the Centre for Science Communication (CSC) at the University of Otago to help spearhead the creative nonfiction writing programme. This is a wonderful place to be, both professionally and personally. So come join me! The Centre is based in Dunedin, a modern, bustling university city located on the southeasterly shores of the beautiful South Island. It was established only in 2008 and has quickly become one of the world’s largest and most productive graduate facilities for the teaching, research, and practice of communicating science to the general public. I’m on an international student recruiting campaign for the Centre, and I thought you might know a student or two (perhaps yourself) who could be a good fit either at the Masters or Doctoral level. Our MA degree is an ideal option for innovative, scientifically inclined students who do not necessarily wish to pursue a traditional academic career but instead to communicate directly with the public through writing, filmmaking, or other forms of science advocacy and engagement. At any one time, we have about 60 graduate students undertaking the following qualifications: • PhD: a three-year, research-based degree focused on a specific, hypothesis-driven aspect of science communication. Applications are accepted at any time and international students pay Domestic NZ Fees for PhD enrolments (only $5,426 USD per year). In addition, both domestic and international students are eligible to apply for a University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship. • Master of Science Communication (MSciComm): a two-year, practice-based degree in one of three certification areas (filmmaking, writing, or popularizing science). This degree involves both a creative and academic thesis component. Applications must be received by **31 OCTOBER**. Competitive funding opportunities are available for international students. • Postgraduate Diploma in Natural History Filmmaking and Communication (PGDipNHFC): a one-year intensive taught course intended for those with extensive industry experience. Applications must be received by **31 OCTOBER** Please feel free to share this announcement with any students or colleagues who may be interested in studying at the Centre for Science Communication at the University of Otago. You can apply through the links below or by contacting the Centre manager Sue Harvey at [email protected] for guidance. Warm Regards, Jesse sciencecommunication.info
