Dear Friends and Supporters, Open Arms is hitting its stride in becoming recognized as a global leader in perinatal birth outcomes. Last week Executive Director, Sheila Capestany, was a panel presenter at the March of Dimes conference, Beyond Birth Outcomes: How Stress & Racism Impact the Generations. She presented about our doula programs, research, life stories, new theories, and programs that work. Other notable speakers were James W. Collins, Jr., MD, MPH on “The Social Determinants of Racial & Ethnic Group Disparities in Birth Outcomes”, and Michèle Curtis, MD, MPH, MML on “Pregnancy in the Context of a Woman’s Life Span”. We are so very proud of Michelle Sarju, Open Arms’ Director of Programs, who just a few days ago made a presentation to an international audience in Lisbon, Portugal at the Transatlantic Forum on Inclusive Early Years: Investing in the development of young children from migrant and low-income families. Michelles presentation wasSuccessful Parent and Family Engagement in the Early Years: Reaching Out to Immigrant and Low-Income Families”. She shared how Open Arms reaches out to immigrant communities and connects them with resources in their children’s earliest years.
