Dear Giant Blue Ring, You’re not different. You’re a circle. The most ordinary of shapes. Is it a crime to be ordinary? God no, but I feel it was a crime to pay $470,000 for you. Art is here to provoke emotion, but I’m not sure what the emotion of “What the hell were you thinking?!” is actually called. Confanger, I guess? But honestly, is it about the money? No. It’s that the Giant Blue Ring looks, well, unfinished, and uninspired. Perhaps we just don’t understand the German artist’s humour, and he is trolling every single Calgarian. If so, Gute Arbeit to him! You speak German, right? You are correct in the sense that other artists contributing to our city makes us more Worldly, sure, but don’t we want people who are travelling to Calgary, from all over the World, to see what the phenomenal artists IN Calgary have contributed to our city? We have a wildly creative collection of artists, who know, love, and respect the city in which they reside. Really, when it comes down to it, even Mayor Nenshi has called you awful. And the senselessness of your construction has even led to the city changing their public art policies. Youre that bad. It’s okay though buddy. Maybe one day you can be a respected piece of art, instead of the Calgary equivalent to the Sochi Olympic Ring that didn’t quite make it. Love, Matt Berry
