Dear Honolulu PD, My intent is to give perspective from a person who just moved here in the military a few months ago. Up front, I did get a ticket recently, for an illegal lane change and as that was some of the motivation of this message, it is not my only complaint. I hope my feedback helps the perception of your police officers and motorcycle cops in particular. The motorcycle cops here riding illegally on the shoulder of the roadways emergency is an unacceptable place to drive. I got a $200 ticket for crossing a double line essentially exiting a little early because traffic was at a stand still and I only had to go to the next exit, even though the lane was COMPLETELY CLEAR and I was in completely stopped traffic (H2 Airport to Hickam exit). The cop not only drove on the shoulder to catch me, he was clearly speeding. Was it really an emergency to pull me over because that is what that lane is for? Put what I am saying in perspective...If I was illegally driving on a part of the road that is marked not to drive on, how can you justify doing the EXACT SAME THING? I was in stopped congested traffic. I used my judgement to exit and change lanes while the lane was open. I havent gotten a ticket ever in 30 years of driving, so I am not a bad driver. If congestion is a problem here and this is why cops have to drive on the shoulder, fix it! The fact that they sit on the downward side of a blind turn off of a mountain to generate ticket revenue is not enforcing the law. That is hypocritical. I have seen countless locals sitting on lawn chairs in the back of pick up trucks. I have seen an entire street by Dole Regal Movies in Honolulu be inhabited by homeless people. Why arent police doing anything about those folks? There is no way that is legal to sit unseatbelted or loiter in a public place. Some even have tents set up. It was such a turn off to see all of those homeless people in one spot I will never bring revenue to that area again. Your departments lack of diligence on cleaning up the streets from these people is hurting local business. Instead you are pull over a guy like me making an illegal lane change at 15mph? I was wrong and paid my ticket, but I hope you can see that it is hard for me to accept police that constantly illegally drive to pull over illegal drivers. I hope this criticism has been constructive enough for some quality control and reflection on the message that you are sending to visitors and locals. I dont know of another forum to communicate this sort of feedback, but I hope it resonates with someone who actually cares to listen and make a difference. r, chad
