Dear Honourable Prime Minister On the Baby Fund There can be little doubt about your maternal instincts. The introduction of this Baby Fund may be a welcomed addition to the package of social benefits that your Government has rolled out to the poor and dispossessed in our society. But Prime Minster, each new initiative is announced so suddenly and without any clear rational that invariably questions arise. Examples abound- The Childrens Life Fund, Colour Me Orange and Lifesport come to mind. In this case of the Baby Fund Im again forced to ask, what is the problem that this initiative is supposed to address? As far as I recall, there is an ongoing food card program that can serve the same purpose. Surely it must be more than a simple gift from the Government. Im trying hard to give you the benefit of the doubt. Is it that we have a population growth problem that you are seeking to remedy? What are the developmental benefits expected from this spending?. Has the Minister of Finance made an estimate of costs and benefits of this gift and its impact on the national Budget? What precisely are these benefits? Will this Baby Fund reach the babies at all? May I remind you that in your campaign for Government in 2010 you hammered the Manning administration for profligate spending. Thus far your Government has increased expenditure in every single fiscal year. In that context therefore, I sincerely hope that you can come to us with a credible rationale for this latest brain wave. Your spin doctors have typically done an excellent job so please set them to work on this one. Im all ears. And eyes, just in case this is just another well planned diversion.
