The time to act is now—Congress has just returned from summer recess, and there are only 27 legislative days before lawmakers adjourn for the year. The Chronic Kidney Disease Improvement in Research and Treatment Act of 2014 (H.R. 4814) is bi-partisan legislation that focuses on kidney disease research, access to treatment and fiscal challenges facing the Medicare program that funds treatment for more than 80 percent of U.S. dialysis patients. Introduced by Reps. Tom Marino (R-PA) and John Lewis (D-GA), this legislation will: 1.Address gaps in much-needed federally funded kidney disease research; 2.Improve access to home dialysis, managed care, and coordinated care options and allow dialysis patients to retain their private health insurance longer; 3.Create economic stability for the Medicare ESRD Program and for providers caring for individuals with kidney failure. AKF has long advocated for many of the key provisions in this legislation—it’s a step in the right direction for people living with kidney disease!
