Dear John, Thank you to everyone who contacted their MP last week - TopicsExpress

Dear John, Thank you to everyone who contacted their MP last week to alert them to the Second Reading of the Modern Slavery Bill. Thanks to you, and colleagues working behind the scenes, hundreds of MPs are getting the message that the Modern Slavery Bill needs to do more to transform the lives of trafficked children in the UK. You helped alert 640 out of 650 MPs about this issue and we estimate that there were around 40 MPs from across the main parties present in the Commons Chamber for the Second Reading. MPs like John Glen (Conservative) and Lisa Nandy (Labour) spoke passionately on the need for a guardianship scheme with legal powers for trafficked children. The next stage of the Bill - the Committee Stage - is likely to pick up speed from the start of September when Parliament returns from its summer break. The Committee Stage will involve around 16 MPs (yet to be appointed) who will examine the Bill in greater detail. Rest assured, once those MPs are appointed well be looking at the best way to work with them to ensure trafficked children are better protected. Over the next few months, well need to work together to ensure more MPs are informed and engaged on the key issues for children - guardianship and non-prosecution - so that when the time comes, all MPs will vote in support of any necessary amendments. Some of our campaigners, like Matthew, Perla, Nelly, and Cecilia have had face-to-face meetings with their MPs. These meetings have been vital to help raise the profile of the issue with MPs, including Home Secretary Theresa May and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Our School Campaigners also recently met with Home Office Minister Norman Baker at a special campaign event to alert him to the scale of public support for guardians with legal powers. They shared the 50,000 signatures of people like you who have joined the campaign to stop child trafficking. Thanks to everyone who has helped to alert MPs and Ministers to the #StopChildTrafficking campaign and what needs to be done to protect the 10 children trafficked into the UK every week. Stay tuned for more developments and information on what you can do next to help trafficked children ahead of Parliament returning on 1 September.
