Dear Lindy Focus Organizers- Like so many others, I was blown away by the music, and as a DJ Id love to be able to share some of that joy with other dancers who couldnt make it to Lindy Focus. Im aware that Bill Speidel started a conversation here that noted that there are many challenges associated with releasing recordings of the music commercially, but I have a few questions: 1) Is it a money issue? If so, how much would it cost to secure the rights, and do whatever else needs to happen to be able to release the music? I would certainly be willing to chip in, and many members of the lindy hop community have already said they would as well. It would be interesting to see if the community was willing to pony up and make it happen. 2) If it cant happen this year, is is possible to make it happen next year? (I dont know if it would make it easier if commercial release of the performances was inserted in the musicians contracts, spelling out exactly how they would be compensated, so that everyone agrees from the outset). 3) If there would still be too many complications to release all the performances, could you record just one night (or just one set?) where all of the song rights or other issues are taken care of? I think that ultimately everyone wins when we can (responsibly) share great music with the masses. Also, please dont take this post as being critical of the organizers or musicians because I know everyone has but forth a tremendous effort, I was just so thrilled with the outcome that Id love to share it with others.
