Dear Mariette, Health Tip from Dr Marilyn Glenville The Salty - TopicsExpress

Dear Mariette, Health Tip from Dr Marilyn Glenville The Salty Six The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association is increasing awareness of sodium and the “Salty Six” – common foods that may be loaded with excess sodium that can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. Sodium doesn’t just affect your heart health, but your physical appearance as well. Excess sodium consumption may make your face feel puffy, give you bags under your eyes, increase swelling in your fingers and make your jeans look, and feel, tighter. In fact, from an American Heart Association/American Stroke Association consumer poll, 75 percent of respondents stated that their trousers feeling too tight is their least favourite effect of bloating which may be associated with excess sodium consumption. The Six Worst Offenders 1. Bread. Check the labels to find low-salt brands. 2. Cold cuts and cured meats. Just 2oz or 6 thin slices of meat can contain as much as half your daily recommended allowance for sodium. 3. Pizza. Next time, limit the cheese and add more veggies. 4. Poultry products. Again, check the labels for sodium content. 5. Just one tin of soup can contain over half your daily recommended allowance. It’s easy to make soup at home with fresh vegetables, legumes and a blender! 6. Just one sandwich or burger can contain more than a whole daily allowance! Go for salads instead – and watch the dressing! Source.
