Dear Media, You all fail the public MISERABLY when it comes to keeping us informed about education. I know its not fair to judge you all on The Standard Times...but this trend extends far beyond the Southcoast. In the photos I posted along with this message, you will see the MOST PROMINENT news coverage regarding events at my place of employment over the last 7 years. The paper even took the time to document the number of unreturned phone calls from the superintendent and prominent school committee members. During these 7 years, the district has seen a 2-year labor dispute, budget cuts, and an overhaul of the curriculum in the core subject areas...I dont know how people should feel about these things...but I know that they should have a chance to feel something about them...if you TRULY believe scheduling Good Friday as a regular school day is the most newsworthy event of the last 7 years, then you are not doing the job of facilitating public debate. Now..I have no problem with you reporting on the scheduling change, and I am sure that there are people eager to discuss it...but if the fact that this is THE MOST thorough reporting you have done about my school district in the last seven years doesnt show you that you arent paying attention...I dont know what does. Please educate yourself, and give the public a better chance to weigh in on the much more important debates that are happening in every school in every district in the United States at this moment. Thanks, Randy ::Drops mic and kicks his sad little soapbox away::
