Dear Members: In response to the dramatic influx of denialist - TopicsExpress

Dear Members: In response to the dramatic influx of denialist drivel surrounding the scientific report spoken about hereinbelow, I hereby simplify the task of arguing against their unwarranted enthusiasm and smugness in the matter. May you simply copy and paste the following accurate, legitimate, and certainly relevant counter-argument— “By strongly implying that the “liberal” position is entirely footless based upon a single report, I submit the following criticisms. Firstly, the report you cite and the associated organization, the Danish Meteorological Institute, actually validate the “liberal” position—that climate change is exigent and widely impacts the world, including the Arctic. I submit it furthermore that global climate change is a threat to our future security, well-being, and prosperity. But in direct reference to report cited, it is clearly outlined that the observed increases in ice cover from the year 2012 in the years 2013 and 2014 still obey the established pattern, i.e., still confirm an overall decrease in the average surface area of the Arctic ice cover over the past three decades. In fact, the graph submitted by the Danish Meteorological Institute in the same study you cite reveals that, even in the ‘unprecedented’ expansion of the past two years, a 2 MILLION KILOMETER, or roughly 25% decrease in Arctic sea ice cover has occurred, relative to the mean value derived from the years of 1979 to 2000 (1). And even this figure likely discounts a significant percentage of sea ice cover shrinkage; loses in sea ice coverage are readily noticeable throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. It is therefore plausible that this trend began well before we began collecting data on sea ice coverage in 1979 via telescopic satellites. Even more so is it highly evident that the mean is significantly lower than it would otherwise be prior to the establishment of the aforementioned trend, as it includes dwindling figures over the decades since, and including the decade of, its inception. Therefore, the true extent of the reduction in the size of the artic sea ice cover is diluted, underrepresenting the severity and extremity of this issue at hand. In reference to Danish Meteorological Institute’s stance of the issue of climate change and its effect on the Arctic is it noteworthy to insert the following addendum: “Since the 1970s the extent of sea ice has been measured from satellites. From these measurements we know that the sea ice extent today is significantly smaller than 30 years ago. During the past 10 years the melting of sea ice has accelerated, and especially during the ice extent minimum in September large changes are observed. The sea ice in the northern hemisphere [has] never been thinner and more vulnerable” (2). Both conclusions, that sea ice extent is “significantly smaller than 30 years ago”, and that, during the past ten years, the rate of the melting of sea ice has accelerated, is readily corroborated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the NOAA, and is powerfully rendered into the following visual representation—https://youtube/watch?v=H-BbPBg3vj8 It is therefore as such that I, and those inspired to environmental action, accuse you of misleading fellow friends and colleagues toward an inaccurate conclusion surrounding the issue of climate change and its dire impact on the Arctic ice sheets. Should you have been aware of this disconfirming, empirical evidence, yet promulgated these largely unfounded views, then we accuse you of lying—of perpetrating misinformation through the deliberate intent to deceive. But in all manners of striving toward our superordinate goals as a human race should we erect as our foremost purpose upon this world to ensure the perpetuity of life, for all humans, just as much as for our non-human brethren—that we protect life—for its very sake. Uprooting entire forests, destroying entire ecosystems, overhauling entire oceans, and spewing deadly chemicals, be it from petroleum clogging the Niger river, coal choking our air, or fracking poisoning our water; or yet be it heavy metals in our ground, from mining, from refineries, from waste and tanneries; for these travesties we daily behold, the abuses to the world, its creatures, and ourselves, the plagues of drought, famine, and death, from which we all come to suffer, and the carelessness of human body that rests protracted where it should fight from the very depth of its heart, its collective soul and will, to live a pleasurable life, free of tyranny, greed, and destruction, all which corrupt this plane of life we now inhabit. We must therefore assent to that noblest volition, that we conserve the wondrous beauties of our planet, that we revere its tremendous bounties as well as its subtlest joys, that we protect the vast, diverse, and spectacular biota and fauna of our planet, and honor the beauteous mosaic of our homeland, that we ensure a life profitable, pleasurable, and just for each and all of ourselves, our posterity, and the descent of all life, upon this singular oasis, this one marble floating green and lush in a void of dark, which knows no other paradise than this planet, our home. 1. ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/icecover.uk.php 2. ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/index.uk.php
