Dear Mount Elgon society, Our research project in Kimilili and Mount Elgon has now been accepted for publication in the Journal of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, Cambridge University Press. In our study we found out that pregnant women that were exposed to civil unrest during the Mount Elgon crisis gave birth to babies with a lower birth weight than mothers not affected by the crisis in Kimilili. This is because stress factors, such as a political crisis, may cause physiological stress within the pregnant mother, which leads to limited growth of the fetus and low birth weight outcome. We would like to thank you all, both in Sweden and in Kenya, who helped us to make this study possible! Elin and Jenny
