Dear Mpho Makhubedu and friends, this is an issue that bothers me since I’ve seen it, and I would like to know your opinion about this. Last weekend I went for a drive through our bordering “township”, Jouberton, to do research for an article I want to write. To say I was shocked is an understatement; I have never seen a more filthier town in my life. Rubbish dumps are all over, right next to the main roads, shops, schools, the technical college, on street corners, all over. I do believe our insolvent Matlosana Municipality is to blame, as services rendered by them are extremely bad - we are obliged to file complaints week after week. The continues strikes of municipal workers – proving their disinterest and underestimation of their value - is also to blame. BUT what boggles my mind is the neglect of the residents of Jouberton to do something about their circumstances. Is living in a clean environment not important for them? How can their children develop a sense of pride and dignity while they grow up in a suburb that looks like a dumping site? What is the situation in your area? What would be your advice to the people of Jouberton?
