Dear Mr. President, You have to say something meaningful. I - TopicsExpress

Dear Mr. President, You have to say something meaningful. I know that you are the President of the United States, but that doesn’t change the fact that we are hurting out here. We are not marching and protesting only because of Eric, Trayvon, or Michael. We are protesting because the “system” seems to be against us. Most of us are law-abiding citizens who get up, dress our kids for school, and hope they return like everyone else and I’m sure you do the same, or probably Michelle does. Nonetheless, we are all the same. JFK said it best when he said, “ Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.” Martin Luther King, Jr. echoed those same sentiments when he quoted from William Cowper’s poem saying, “Fleecy locks, and black complexion cannot forfeit natures claim; Skins may differ, but affection Dwells in white and black the same. I’m not asking you to put your hands up in a black power salute. I am not asking you to disgrace the Office of the Presidency. Some will say that regardless of what you do. I for one have been all in for you since you began your accent to the white house. But, what I am saying is that we need your intellect to teach us something. We need your gift of persuasion to teach the world what it is that we should learn about race, class, and culture. Many don’t know this, but you studied under the late great Harvard Law School Professor Derrick Bell, the father of Critical Race Theory, who taught race relations as good as anyone before or after his time. So, I know you can teach what we all need should learn. I need you to teach and articulate for those of us whose voices have been marginalized, if I can steal a word from Kanye. We need for you to tell White America that we don’t harbor ill will or detest every white person for the actions of a few. We need you to tell White America that we don’t condone abhorrent acts of violence. But, we also need some one to acknowledge our pain too. I know you can’t be everything to everyone, but we need you to say something meaningful that will speak not only to our sensibilities but to our hearts. We know that in the end it want change anything, but darn it, it sure will make us feel better. Sincerely, All of Us
