Dear Mr. Rightmire: Thank you for contacting me regarding Sharia law. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this important matter. As you may know, Sharia law is the law of Islam, and many tenets of this law run directly counter to American law and values, particularly in areas of crime, economics, and the treatment of women. There have been disturbing reports of American judges who have referenced Sharia law in their decisions. I believe it is imperative that our judges soundly affirm that claims or defenses permitted by Sharia law have no place in the U.S. justice system. American judges should not view cases before them as opportunities to change U.S. law so that it is more in line with Sharia law or any other international, religious, or foreign law. Such practice is incompatible with the goals of upholding American values, the United States Constitution, and laws passed by our elected officials. Therefore, you may be certain that I will hold judicial nominees to this standard as they are considered by the Senate. The U.S. constitutional system is the product of the unique vision of Americas Founding Fathers. This system has produced the most successful country in history, a nation that has been a “shining city on the hill” to the rest of the world, as President Ronald Reagan said. As an elected representative of our nation, I will continue to support policies that protect our citizens and our national interests—regardless of whether international, religious, or foreign laws coincide.
