Dear Ms. Mills: Thank you for contacting me regarding the Supreme Court decisions in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood v. Burwell which address womens access to contraception coverage. I appreciate hearing from you about these troubling decisions. In these cases, the Supreme Court ruled that for-profit employers with religious objections do not have to comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements to provide contraception coverage. This decision sets a dangerous precedent and takes us back to a time in history when women had no voice in their own healthcare decisions. While the Supreme Court has decided it will not protect access to health care for women and their dependents, I am committed to making sure all women have access to the care they need - including birth control and other federally required benefits, like immunizations - regardless of who signs their paycheck. That is why I was pleased to work with my colleagues to introduce the Protect Womens Health from Corporate Interference Act - also known as the Not My Bosss Business Act - which would restore the contraceptive coverage requirement guaranteed by the ACA and protect coverage of other health services from employers who want to impose their beliefs on their employees by denying health care benefits. One of my top priorities as a Senator and as a mother has always been to ensure that all women in this country are able to make decisions about their bodies, their health, and their families. On July 16, 2014, the Senate voted on the Not My Bosss Business Act and, with a vote of 56-43, fell short of the 60 votes required to beat the Senate Republicans filibuster. Although my bill fell just short of passing the Senate, rest assured that I will continue to fight so all women have access to the health services they need and deserve. Again, thank you for writing me. If you would like to know more about my work in the Senate, please feel free to sign up for my updates at murray.senate.gov/updates. Please stay in touch. Sincerely, Patty Murray United States Senator
