Dear Ms. Shafer, Thank you for your message regarding S.895, the Antimicrobial Data Collection Act. I appreciate hearing from you. I am a proud cosponsor of S.895. The ineffectiveness of antibiotics against bacterial infections is a serious problem. Researchers have found that common bacterial infections have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics, largely due to the overuse and excessive prescription of antibiotics. However, the lack of publicly reported information on antibiotics in farm animals leaves us with incomplete information on the full extent of antibiotic use. Antibiotic resistance is a grave public health problem, and one that researchers throughout the world are working to solve. S.895 was introduced by Senator Gillibrand on May 8, 2013 and referred to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Though I am not a member of this committee, I will do everything I can to ensure that this legislation passes the Senate during the 113th Congress. Thank you again for your message.
