Dear NAACP, I am a resident of Lawton, Oklahoma. On October 3, 2014 my nephew, an African American allegedly committed suicide in the small town of Derby, Kansas. Our whole family does not believe that he committed suicide, and believe his wife (a Caucasian) the daughter of a well known professor at Kansas State University murdered him. We believe the wifes family whom are well to do, are being protected from the Derby police department. The Derby, Kansas police department has failed to properly investigate the crime scene, even after we informed them of our suspicions, due to suspicious messages by my nephews wife to my brother and other family members a few hours before and after my nephews death. Additionally, Im trying not to make my nephews untimely suspicious death and lack of a full investigation seem racially motivated by the Derby Police Department. But it really makes you wonder when Derby, KS, only has about 410 Black or African American residing in the small town. Makes you wonder how racial equality really is in these small towns, in light of whats going on in Ferguson, Missouri. We tried to get answers from the Derby Police Dept., even went so far as to provide information of our suspicions regarding my nephews death. And exactly two months later to this day, we still do not have any answers to our questions asked! DERBY, KANSAS census = Race Population % of Total Total Population 22,158 100 White 20,301 91 Hispanic or Latino 1,163 5 Two or More Races 670 3 Black or African American 410 1 Asian 345 1 American Indian 214 Below 1% Some Other Race 188 Below 1% Our family does not have a lot of money. But we do want justice to be served for my family and my nephews son & daughter that he horrifically left behind. Any help or assistance from a legal representative pro bono, or for a small fee would be greatly appreciated with our mission to seek justice in my nephews untimely horrific death. The Derby police are doing nothing and turning a blind eye in the matter of this case, and the Kansas Sedgwick county DA office states nothing can be done in this case without the Derby, police presenting the case to the DA office or my family retaining an attorney. Do black lives matter in Kansas? My nephew and our family deserve Justice to be served!
