Dear New Year resolution-ers, Lets say that you have made a resolution this year to lose ______ pounds. This is commendable and wonderful, so I want to provide a perspective to help make that goal easier to reach. End goals take time and we can often lose steam towards our goal because of the length needed to reach our desire. Even if we are making progress, we can write ourselves off as failures because the time to reach the goal isnt happening as fast as we would like. We can then get frustrated and give up, feeling like failures. The sad thing is, you arent a failure, you just werent feeling the satisfaction of accomplishment because the distance of your desire takes so much time. Satisfaction from accomplishment leads to better compliance, which then becomes a cyclical effect until you suddenly realize youve hit your goal. To do this, focus on the process! What is easier? Losing 20 pounds or exercising 4 days this upcoming week? That is pretty obvious, exercising 4 days! You do this, you feel accomplished because you hit the process goal and that recharges you for the next week. You repeat the goal of exercising 4 days for the week and also decide to limit treats to just 2 times that week. Again, simple, realistic, measurable and part of the process. You hit the second weeks goals and find you feel even more accomplished and it gets easier and easier. Studies suggest that if we focus on the process of our larger goals, we are much more likely to realize those end goals. Focus on the process and achieve!
