Dear Odyssey Families, December 1st though December 5th is Odyssey’s annual Literacy Week event. This year’s theme is “Reading is Snow Much Fun!” We have plenty of fantastic things going on. During Literacy Week it is our tradition to have Guest readers (people from our community who will come in to read to our kids throughout the week), a book fair, and a story night with crafts and activities. In connection with Literacy Week, the 6-8 graders will be taking a field trip to Barefoot Books to observe the publishing process during the week of December 8th. This year, Barefoot Books will be running our annual book fair. Barefoot Books, is an award-winning children’s book publisher based in Concord, Massachusetts and founded by two mothers. Barefoot books are richly imaginative and beautifully illustrated. Their emphasis on imagination, creativity, diversity and community will be a wonderful addition to our school and your home. A selection of books will be available in the Elementary 5/6 Classroom during the following times: Wednesday 12/3 11:30am- 6pm Thursday 12/4 3-6pm and 6:30-8:00 pm There will also be an Open House for current and prospective families and will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Your children are welcome to join us for cookies, crafts, stories, songs and movement while you shop at the book fair. Please invite your friends to the Thursday evening event! Barefoot Books products are not commonly sold in stores and this is a great opportunity for parents to find them. You will also be able to shop online so grandparents and others who want to participate will be able to from wherever they are! The online store has many more books than Barefoot is able to bring to the school so shopping there before or after here works too! Here is the link to use: store.barefootbooks/?bf_affiliate_code=000-1ikv-10585 Remember that children are more likely to read the books they personally get to choose. It’s one of the best ways to motivate kids to read more. We know you are going to love the beautifully illustrated and culturally diverse books that Barefoot has to offer. -Michelle and Kerry
