Dear PUP Support Group Members. The following is a transcript from a press conference given by Clive Palmer regarding the Palmer United Party policy on Sharia Law and his response to Senator Jacqui Lambies comments regarding the issue. Video at the end of post. Questions regarding these issue start at 17:35 minutes through to 20:11 minutes. Clive: You (the press) may have more controversial political questions you may be reluctant to ask me. This is the opportunity to open up to other questions at all. I am happy to answer them for you.... Q: Given the current climate how helpful is it that Jacqui Lambie continues to make such derogative statements about Sharia Law? Clive: Well, just dealing with that issue in our party we have a process like all other parties to make policies by the party room. Theres a vote and I announce what the policy is. So, maybe I can take you through what the policy is on that issue so its absolutely clear where our party stands. In Australia we have Australian Law. I am a member of the House of Representatives. Ive sworn an oath of loyalty to this country and to the constitution and to our processes in here about Australian Law. L.A.W. What we also have, of course, in Australia is lore. L.O.R.E. which doesnt have the force of The Law. And, for example, I am a Roman Catholic. And as a Roman Catholic we have Canon Law that governs my religion and a lot of things I believe by being a Catholic. But theres a section of it that was responsible for the burning of people at the stake; for quartering of people in the Inquisition and very violent outcomes. Of course, that section of the Canon Law doesnt apply to my life because it is against Australian Law that I am sworn to defend. I think the same thing is true of Sharia Law. Now theres a part of that where people will get their religious faith which dates back to the middle ages which conflicts with our Law here in Australia which doesnt apply and can never be used. Thats how I see it personally. Thats our partys position on the matter. Q: Should Senator Lambie tone down her comments? Clive: Well, we have a situation in this party where we like to give everyone the right to bring up ideas and say what they think, you know. A mistake only becomes an error when you refuse to correct it. So, at the party level, the party room, we try to correct the mistakes that we make as individuals and we try to get everybody having a good look at it. But its up to her to make these statements and I am not her particular keeper, right. Shes a Senator of the Australian Parliament and shes entitled to her position. Q: Do you think Senator Lambie has a long term future in the party? Clive: Well, shes indicated that she has. Certainly shes been very supportive when it comes to this particular measure which is one of the ones we support in relation to the abolition of the Carbon Tax and making sure the benefits flow down to people. Shes been supportive of the repeal of the Mining Tax and a lot of areas like that. I see no reason why not, you know. Of course, if you read the press youd think otherwise. But I never read the press. [Transcript by Sam Davies. PUP Member and Advocate for Carers, Disabled and the Aged.]
