Dear Parents and Friends, Many of you have been inquiring as to the amount of damage in the school due to a roof flood on Sunday. There is only one roof drain on the entire original structure. The flow of water was restricted by ash helicopters and so the water pooled on the roof during heavy rains. The water level became high enough so that water leaked into the restroom vents, skylights, and roof hatch. The water leaked into the building and damaged the ceilings of several classrooms. Thanks to a sensitive fire alarm system, we were notified of the problem quite soon. Because so many of you responded to our plea for help, most of the contents were removed from the flooded area immediately and salvaged. The insurance adjustors are processing the claim, and until we hear back from the insurance company we can do little more than continue in our attempt to lower the humidity and ventilate the building. Aside from the ceilings and insulation above several rooms needing to be replaced and carpeting being dried, we lost a piano of the 1940s vintage, and a handful of library books. Because of the large amount of water on the roof, the roof membrane was compromised and there will be a definite need for roof work. Temporary patching has been done. The extent of the roof damage is not yet known. Thanks again to everyone who has assisted in any way. We are in communication with our friends at Rock Valley Christian School. We have learned that the school basement did take on some water, but it doesnt seem to be too serious comparatively. We have informed them that we stand ready to assist if the need arises. We will forward the request for help to you if we learn they need assistance with anything. Enjoy your summer. Harlan De Vries, Principal
