Dear Pat McCrory and North Carolina Republican Party -- THIS is why you must expand Medicaid no matter how much you want our poor people to suffer so much that they move out of state (btw: theyre too poor to move). Want to continue to be known as the fiscally responsible party? Then you MUST expand Medicaid. Were sending money to DC and it is going to other states. We have 500,000 people still uncovered who, when they go to the ER, end up costing the rest of us anyhow. When they go, its often after complications have set in and that ends up costing us even more. Treating a cut is cheap; amputating an infected limb is expensive. Then, these folks end up on SS Disability, costing us even more. And then theres the rural hospitals that are being forced to close because they treat so many uninsured low-income folks... not only do these hospitals not get paid for their services to these folks, but they lose out on additional federal funds that are available only to hospitals in states that have expanded Medicaid.
