Dear Print Media companies that are late to the party and are now trying to run a website, We WONT pay for monthly subscriptions. You sill dont get it. In the old days, when content was finally sent to the printing press a month after it was written, and the magazine/newspaper then had to be delivered by mail or truck to subscribers or newsstands...THAT cost was covered by the subscription fees. It was basically a break even on the old balance sheet, and YOUR profit was made from advertising. I know this, because my first company in a prior life, was a print media circulation business. I worked directly with the print media companies, almost on a daily basis. Your advertising rates were determined by the ABC,(Audit Bureau of Circulations). The more subscribers, the higher your advertising rates. This is why you paid my business $20 for a subscription that you charged the subscriber $12 for. If youre not good with math, thats an $8 LOSS per subscriber through me...but you made up the difference through...ADVERTISING. It was and always be your biggest cash cow. Times have now changed. Nobody uses the Gutenberg business model anymore. You can lease a webserver for $500 a month, much cheaper than the $200,000 a month in the good ol days that you wont let go of, and reach an audience that is...get this...the entire frigging world. A bonus of this method? You can update content..in seconds. Media websites still make their money the old fashioned way though...from ADVERTISING. Get with the program (cough Chicago Tribune Company cough), or yall will be going through ANOTHER bankruptcy.
