Dear Richard: It’s been weeks since the Detroit Free Press revealed the truth about for-profit charter schools in Michigan, and yet Republicans in Lansing are still refusing to do anything about it. It’s unthinkable: charter schools in Michigan get $1 billion annually from taxpayers, but have zero oversight. None. They don’t have to account for the money. They don’t have to answer to voters when their boards make bad deals or hires. They don’t even have to give kids a basic education – even the worst schools have been allowed to stay open for a decade. That ends now. It’s time to ban for-profit charter schools. Our kids deserve schools where the priority is their future success, not where they’re seen as a profit source. Sign our petition calling on Lansing Republicans to take up our ban on for-profit charter schools. Thanks for all you do, Michigan Senate Democrats
