Dear Sea Shepherd page administrator, Sea Shepherd Belgium is currently conducting its first National campaign. Each year more marine mammals such as harbor porpoises die in gillnets used by sport fishermen on Belgian beaches. The European Union banned the recreational use of this type of non-selective nets in 1991 already. Nevertheless the Flemish government still allows its use on the low water line of our beaches. Moreover, sport fishermen also use the gill nets in spring, when important North Sea fish species like sole and plaice approach the beaches to spawn. The next generations of these stocks are thus removed for a “hobby”, while the commercial fishery needs stark subsidies to stay afloat as catches keep decreasing. Can you please help us in our mission to save our marine mammals and fish stocks by sharing this video with Alex Cornelissen and Tom Waes (Belgian SSCS ambassador) on your page and by encouraging your readers to sign the petition and share the video? https://youtube/watch?v=uQk_A1u5exg Thank you very much in advance, Anne Van Ingelgem Director Sea Shepherd Belgium Katrien Vandevelde Information / Communication manager Sea Shepherd Belgium
