Dear Singers, I want to tell you something that happens to me and - TopicsExpress

Dear Singers, I want to tell you something that happens to me and how I deal with it (this story applies to all musicians): You know how I seem all confident on stage? Well, sometimes I am hired to sing songs that some other singer has done well. I have to study the tunes and the other singer has an incredible voice (more incredible than mine). I get momentarily insecure and feel worried that I will never sing it as well as they did. I then have to do something that is essential to success. I make the song my own. I learn it, the way the original singer did it, then I figure out how to sing the song in my own way - maybe nothing like the original singer. The song must become honest and become completely my own. It must in no way sound like an imitation of the old voice, and must sound owned by me. Maybe at the point where the other vocalist did a lot of riffs, I may choose to sing very soft and inward, or hold one long note. And make choices that are true to my instrument - Not attempt to do things that my voice cannot handle, yet emphasize my strengths. Remember a flute can never be a saxophone. Neither can a guitar ever be a piano. Learn your own instrument and celebrate the strengths of your instrument, while accepting the limitations of that same instrument. The lyrics and story of the song must be told the way I would tell it. This will prevent you from sounding like a poor imitation and like a sincere story-teller.
