Dear Sir, On behalf of SANTHI we wish to express our deepest sense of appreciation and gratitude to you. We want to pass you some information about attapadi tribals. Due to lack of sufficient food and proper treatment all tribals are anemic. There are 192Ooru (colony) and tribal population is 30,000. In my visit I realize following things are the emergency needs for their survival and our implementation of this project method. We successfully implement this project at agali thalayur for the last 5 months. Here we are undertaking our next ooru named Kandiyoor. Kandiyoor is one of the largest ooru in attapadi. It is situated at agali Panchayath. There are 136 “Irulas” tribal families in this Kandiyoor ooru. These 136 families are living in 116 houses. Out of these 116 houses only 8 houses are built by concrete. All other houses are under the ravages of time (more than 40 yrs), it need emergency reformation and overhaul. Some of them are living in temporary sheds built by plastic sheets, grass and palm leaf. Out of these 116 houses only 16 houses have toilets. All other tribals depends Ditches and land Areas for their bath and other basic needs. They need 100 toilets urgently. Each toilet cost 12,500 RS. There are multi drainage systems in Kandiyoor. But In summer season this colony is under abrasive Water shortage. All the houses are very dirty. Cattle, goat sheds are built very close to the houses so surroundings are also very insanitary. There is no effective system for waste disposal, due to this in rainy season the hygienic condition of this ooru will become very bad. The present population is 196 men and 194 women. Presently most of the houses have no electric supply, even though ooru has electricity. They have primary health center, nurseries and community hall but have less facility. In the year 2010-13, the deaths of five infants were reported in Kandiyoor. They need regular checkups:- As first step with santhi mobile lab we can start blood checkups from one ooru . Maximum population is 300 in one ooru. After completing one Ooru we can move to next. Expecting cost for 100 persons check up is Rs. 3000 So many educated persons (like Nurses and Lab technicians etc) in Attapadi tribals. We can select some of them for this project by giving them remuneration. This will help them in 2 ways. One they get a job and other thing those people has a satisfaction in their work. Our benefit is with the help of these nurses we can easily implement our project. How can you, as an Individual, help the starving people of Attapadi? By setting up this small ooru with the basic community needs including employment, food, sanitation, water and education, we will be uplifting this small colony to the minimum basic standards for human living. This will spread to other colonies. Govt., Panchayath and other colonies themselves will try to emulate this most practical model. A collective contribution can easily meet the project needs. If this project is successfully carried out, we can expect all other colonies to come to this standard or better in the next three years with the support of various agencies including Govt., Panchayath and other charitable organizations.
