Dear Sir, When tomorrow comes these people will say Nigerian - TopicsExpress

Dear Sir, When tomorrow comes these people will say Nigerian Writers are maestros in documenting the tragedies in their country. They will say we are prisoners waiting at the gallows. We are men with hearts full of broken histories. We are witnesses at bloody scenes. We know when people slump and what they say before they die. We know their dreams and how they desire to actualise these dreams. They will say we are good writers. We are good writers because we paint the pains of people who find no meaning in life. We are good writers because we erect monuments for the dead by writing elegies. We try to make graves for the unburied through our poems. We try to revive the dim light of life through the poems we pen. II Sir, spending a whole day in writing an elegy is better than listening to a song by a musician who only knows how to tell us about how women and money are inseparable duo. To write an elegy is an easy task in this country. We have developed a keen interest in death. We no longer fear the dark fingers of this dreary creature. Our children die and we take flowers to their tombs. Isnt that okay? As parents we know what it takes to bury our children at dawn. There are some whose bodies will never return home. What about those whose dreams breathe beneath the rubble? What about the forgotten names of dead soldiers? Sir, to write an elegy is an easy task. I have read about life in the blank eyes of these unfortunate children. Their hands are full of sterile dreams. (RMG)
