Dear Soldiers in the Imaginary War on Christmas. A little - TopicsExpress

Dear Soldiers in the Imaginary War on Christmas. A little primer: The expression Happy Holidays has been in use since the 16th century. Get over it. Ultimately, the meaning of Happy Holidays is separate from the phrase Merry Christmas, not a replacement for it. In fact, when you think about it, its weird to say Merry Christmas weeks before it happens, kind of like saying Happy Birthday weeks ahead of time or Happy Canada Day in June. Maybe if you say it referring to the future, as in We wish you a Merry Christmas or Have a Merry Christmas, it makes a little more sense. Or as Edward ODonnell (an associate professor of history at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA) puts it: After all, the holiday celebrates the birth of Jesus,an event the Bible tells us was hailed by achoir of angels singing, “Peace on Earth and goodwill toward men.” Raging against the inclusive, tolerant and ultimately harmless phrase, Happy Holidays, runs directly counter to this theme. Indeed, it’s like making war on Christmas. So chill out...enjoy the Christmas celebrations, be Merry. But dont freak out when someone wishes you well. Thank them and respond however you see fit. Merry Christmas!!
