Dear Spartan Race, I usually keep me opinions to myself, but on the topic of the Temecula Beast I think I need to speak up. I think before and during the race Spartan did a great job of sending out emails with heat warnings and telling people how to be prepared and what to expect. you guys mentioned you would be adding numerous water/ice stations, great job. During the race I thought Spartan did a good job of keeping things going smoothly, turning on the sprinklers in the big grass field for runners to go through, the water truck sparaying athletes, great job. The decision to shorten/cancel the race was im sure a tough one, disappointing, but one I agree with. As a fitness trainer that trains clients outdoors year round in Las Vegas I have to be aware of extreme conditions year round and for this race I knew it was going to be really hot at this time of the year and was surprised you guys were doing this race in that location at that time of year. So I prepared my clients accordingly, camelbaks, gels, snacks, salt tabs, cool clothing, hats, bandanas, etc etc.. Now to the part I have an issue with, I have seen several emails from Spartan posted on various FB pages now saying anybody that didnt do the full course is an unofficial finisher and to come back in Jan and become a official finisher. All 25 members of our team were out there from 2:49 to 6:49 running the entire course you had designed, the only section they did NOT run was the section you closed off due to rattle snakes, that should NOT make them unofficial finishers. If they are unofficial finishers did you also make the Malibu finishers from 2 years ago unofficial finishers when you removed the barbed wire section later in the day due to bottlenecks? Did you make the finishers from this years Pa race unofficial when you shortened the bucket and sand bag carries as they were taking people too long? If you did NOT make those finishers unofficial then you should also NOT make the Temecula finishers unofficial because of a snake detour. As for the runners on the course who you redirected to go straight to the finish line wherever they were on the courseat that time as the race was being canceled/delayed/postponed, that is a different story as those runners only ran 3-8 miles which isnt even the length of some Sprints/Supers, thats a different story. So IF youre going to say only 1,000 out of 6,500 racers are official finishers and that everybody else needs to come back, you are probably going to lose a few customers out of this. To tell somebody that put hours of sweat equity in for three months and then dealt with 100+ degrees for over 6hrs that she is an unofficial finisher while somebody in Malibu that didnt go through a 50 meter barbed wire section that was bottlnecked and then removed from the course is a finisher makes no sense. CONGRATS to everybody from Gut Check Fitness Vegas and Gut Check Fitness that COMPLETED the BEAST from Hell!!
