Dear Students, Like many other universities in Australia, the - TopicsExpress

Dear Students, Like many other universities in Australia, the University of Tasmania (UTAS) is currently in discussions with unions about the next enterprise agreement for our staff. One of the unions currently in negotiations, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), has advised the University that it will commence industrial action to support their demands in the current round of negotiations. It is common practice across Australian universities for the NTEU to announce industrial action in ongoing negotiations - sometimes with an end result that students are affected. Unfortunately here at UTAS, the NTEU have flagged action to include bans on the release of mid-year examination and assessment results. What is a results ban? A results ban is the withholding of results by teachers and lecturers from the University - their employer. This means the University may not be able to provide some students with end of semester results or other results for assignments or exams within the usual timeframe. We will work with the NTEU to obtain exemptions for students who expect to graduate this semester, international students on student visas and other students significantly affected (such as students with scholarship requirements, those with a need for grades to obtain professional registration to commence employment, etc). Further advice on how to obtain an exemption will be sent to students as soon as possible. What is the University going to do about this situation? We will be working with Deans, Academic Heads and professional staff to develop strategies and options to mitigate (as much as we are reasonably able) the impact on students of this action. In the meantime, we have set up a page of frequently asked questions (utas.edu.au/students/industrial-action-by-nteu-members/_nocache), which provides further advice. You can also contact your local Student Centre for support. We hope to have this matter resolved as soon as possible and keep any impact on students to a minimum.
