Dear Students Wits University SRC election results are out today. There were three tickets contesting the elections. -Project W an independent student organisation. -The Progressive Youth Alliance (an amalgamation of Muslim students Association, ANC youth league, SASCO, Young Communist league). -The Economic Freedom Fighters (you know them for asking for the money back, and red berets). I was running with Project W and we had an impressive group of student leaders who believe in removing partisan politics from student governance, bringing merit based leadership to University communities. THE NUMBER ONE CANDIDATE AT THE UNIVERSITY THE NUMBER ONE CANDIDATE AT THE UNIVERSITY I wrote it in bold because , I am humbled, I am honored, but mostly I am thankful. Just three years ago my dreams were broken , I was homeless and I was facing the prospects of not ever continuing my studies. I was a nobody. Today you guys have made me somebody, you have given me reasons to stay positive. Firstly you bought earphones from the earphones guy and that support enabled me to keep surviving and to come back to University. Without the students buying my earphones, I would never have survived. Last year you took a nobody and put me into the SRC to represent students. This year you gave me another chance , and you gave me the most votes. I am the only student who is serving a second term in the SRC because you believed I should continue serving you. I want you to know that I do not take this trust lightly. I will not rest , I will be open to your input and I will be here for you. I want you to know that whatever position I get I will go the extra mile, I have been homeless,I have gone for days without food, I have been out of school. I know the agony of losing your only chance. I will do everything in my power to prevent my story from happening to anyone ever again. We still have serious problems besetting the University 1. 60% dropout rate in first year 2. Financial exclusions 3. An unsecured Braamfontien 4. Inefficient services 5. Red tape 6. Costly clubs and societies 7. Parking is still scanty 8. Residences are under resourced Project W will still work extremely hard to deal with those challenges. I will work extremely hard to deal with those challenges, and I will work with anyone who seeks to solve these problems. They do not just affect some Wits Students, they affect all Wits Students. Project W will go back to the drawing board, we will work harder throughout the year. We will not take this defeat as a set back but as an opportunity to learn. This is only our second year and we are still in the game. If you are interested in being part of this team, wearing the t shirt that says you are a real leader. We are looking for volunteers. We want to raise 500 000 rands for under privileged students before the end of the year, we want to raise 10 000 canned food items. We have work to do , and we need you to help us do it. Thank you once again for giving us another chance, thank you for giving me a second chance. I remain your servant I love this University, it gave me a chance to chase my dream of being a top lawyer, and I want to keep giving back to the University community. The guy in a suit (the suit you put me in)
