Dear TAAM Friends, As many of you know, a small group of peaceful demonstrators was violently attacked by police while they were protesting a government plan to convert the popular Gezi Park into a shopping mall in Taksim Square, Istanbul. Pursuing protests against this police brutality and government suppression turned into a national unrest. Tens of thousands of people took the streets in many cities in Turkey for more than 13 days and demonstrations are continuing with great support from all over the world. As Turkish American Association of Minnesota, we condemn the state violence and brutality against the citizens of Turkey. We stand for a secular democratic society where personal freedom and free speech are not suppressed by the government, and we wholeheartedly side with Turkish people in protecting their basic individual rights. Many Turkish Americans and American friends of Turkey gathered on Grand Avenue St. Paul on June 2nd to show their support. On June 6th we continued to show our solidarity with Gezi Park protesters for freedom of expression in a gathering in front of the WCCO Building in Minneapolis. A group of TAAM members were interviewed by the local TV channel KSTP and aired on local news on July 12th. We stand for personal rights and freedom of speech, and condemn the police brutality against peaceful protesters. TAAM Board of Directors.
