Dear Tales I am a 30 year old lady currently facing a crisis. I am the 1st born of 4 girls and come from a well to do family as my father has a very successful chain of businesses. I have been in the US for my education and after my masters I relocated back to Ghana 3 years ago to help my father run his many businesses. I began by learning from all the departments in order to know all the ins and outs of the entire business. My father began training me to take over someday and I worked diligently. Unfortunately a year ago, my father died suddenly after a heart ailment and the responsibility of running everything fell on my shoulders. It was a very difficult period as my mother was overcome with grief and was not in the position to do much so I had to be a strong woman and take care of the funeral expenses, the burial and also take care of the company and the family . My father didn’t have a will, but with me already running the company with him, my mother insisted that I assumed control as the head of the family and company and after the burial of my father I assumed my position as Head of the Company and began running the company and his other business ventures. Tales after my father died, my father’s brothers, my Uncles along with other members of the extended family started talking about taking over father’s business as I was a woman and to them, incapable of properly running a company, so I should bring a detailed account of all my father’s assets and its documents to them for safe keeping, and let my uncles assumed responsibility of the company since my father didn’t have a son and rather all daughters but I quickly told them that would not be necessary as I am well equipped and capable of doing so without them. This did not sit well with them and they began trying to devise means of getting documents to one of my father’s business which was a real estate development so they can go and take charge but again I was able to stop them from gaining access to those documents I began personally taking stock of my father’s assets to prevent any family member from attempting to take control of any of them. This began to upset my uncles as they weren’t getting access to the properties and money as they thought will happen now that my father is dead. Tales the latest development is, a woman we know nothing about also appeared claiming that she was traditionally married to my father for 8 years with 2 children and claims she is entitled to part of his property and is going to take us to court if we refuse to give her a portion. Naa can you believe that she has the backing of my paternal side? Apparently they know about the marriage between this other woman and my father, in fact they accompanied him to marry her!! And they kept this a secret for 8 good years!!! DNA test proves that the kids are truly my father’s children. Naa all these revelations is very shocking and it feels like a movie. My mother is still in a state of shock as every other day we have to rush her to the hospital for high blood pressure. My mother has invested so much into the growing of this business financially because she had to sell her business and use the money as starting capital when the business at a point in time, was going bankrupt and collapsing! I am so confused and at a loss on the right course of action, because really the other kids are my half siblings, but my problem is the intention of the family and the other woman. My family members are up to no good and want to take control of my father’s assets and deprive my mother, myself and my younger sisters from all that my father worked hard to achieve for us. Should I pursue the courts or not? 90 percent of me wants to but I am afraid of the outcome…what should I do?
