Dear Tarryn Fisher, It was a dark and stormy night, only it - TopicsExpress

Dear Tarryn Fisher, It was a dark and stormy night, only it wasn’t quite that dark, nor was it that stormy. But nonetheless, the sky was darker than it would have been if it were sunny and the clouds were heavier than they would have been if they were any less heavy. We had just arrived at Harrah’s and were heading toward the Dolly Parton electronic gaming systems. You swung your eyes in my direction and said, “We don’t have a card. Don’t we need to load money onto the card?” I laughed heartily and slapped you on the shoulder. I said, “ Tarryn, Tarryn, Tarryn. You just put cash in the machine. Like so.” And I proceeded to shove a twenty into the machine. Your brow furrowed and you grunted before saying, “Poot knocker. I need to go withdraw money from the ATM, I guess.” You stood and turned and then you were gone. I watched you leave. You were wearing…some sort of outfit that night. Clothes, I assume. Maybe a shirt and pants or pants and a shirt, or some concoction fit for a lady of the night. I silently wondered how long you would be gone and if I should wait for you to try my hand at the Dolly, or if I should go ahead and push MAX BET. I decided against the bet. Instead, I pulled my phone out of my purse and slid my newly-manicured finger across the screen to unlock it, never expecting what happened next. My breath caught. I choked. I looked around, because surely this was a joke. SURELY. I stood and then I sat, for I didn’t know which to do. I wanted to run to you, to find you and tell you what event had just occurred, but I wasn’t sure where you were. I waited, smiling and wide-eyed until you approached. You took a seat at your Dolly machine as though the world didn’t stop while you were gone. But it did stop. It stopped, rewound, fast-forwarded, paused and then lurched until it was still and silent. I held up my phone and a smile spread across my lips. I looked at you and I said, “Tarryn. Harry Connick Jr. just tweeted me happy birthday.” Do you remember that night? I do. Vividly.
