Dear Uganda Friends….I would like you to consider becoming involved in this event Transform Leaders Conversation scheduled for September 6th. For some time we have had the idea of organizing an annual private sector Leaders Gathering in Kampala. For too long we have waited for the government to set the agenda for positive change in Kampala while the private sector sits back and the visionary people are not linked up to exchange ideas and to partner together. But this initiative via Worship Harvest Church seems to be along the lines of what we had also envisioned. The senior leader there is a friend of ours and I met with him about making it broader than just for his church membership and he has the same desire. It is scheduled to take place on September 6 - other details are below. Transform* THE LEADERS’ CONVERSATION THE CHALLENGE Everyone agrees that WE NEED TRANSFORMATION and we need it real quick. What everyone is still trying to figure out is how do we do that? How do we attain sustainable, empowering transformation for our communities and nations in the midst of emerging or evolving global challenges; poverty, disease, illiteracy, violence, broken families, spiritual emptiness, corruption, pillaging, human trafficking, religious militancy, terrorism, economic and social inequalities? And those of us who follow and love JESUS are asking, where are we, His Church in all this? THE ALTERNATIVE There is a theory I heard from some wise men that we are now exploring: The greatest influence on the health of a nation is the health of its individual communities. The greatest influence on the health of a community is the health of the churches therein. The greatest influence on the health of a church is the health of its leadership. This means that the path of health starts with pastors and church leaders. The Church is uniquely positioned as the light of the world and salt of the earth. There is no better agent for good and transformation as the Church of Christ, living out its full Kingdom transformative potential. And there is no better way to frustrate that than unhealthy pastors and leaders. There is probably an endless list of health indicators to look at. We hope to restrict ourselves to these five areas, as defined by the Five Capitals, an interesting concept by Mike Breen. Spiritual Health – Relationship with God apart from church duties. A nonprofessional relationship! Relational Health – Relationship with spouse, children, family and friends. Physical Health – Leading a healthy balanced life; rest, fitness, time, skills. Intellectual Health – Ideas and concepts. Reading, studying, exposure, the how tos… Financial Health – Acquiring, managing & growing personal finances separate from church resources THE STRATEGY – The Five Cs Converge: There is something about meeting in the same space. We intend to converge, annually, monthly, sporadically, whatever works. When something is really important, there is simply no substitute for physical presence. Having converged, we intend to converse. Converse: Conversation is the key to starting and sustaining relationships. We hope to create a safe, non-threatening space, in which leaders can eventually open up and be real; about our successes, failures, strengths, weaknesses, fights and fears. Conversation will lead to connection. Connect: Through these conversations, friendships and synergy will develop and working together will be the natural outcome. Networking will occur and people will have access to people and things that other people have access to. We’ve already seen this happen in the ongoing monthly conversations. Deep connections lead to safe space for challenge. Challenge: No one appreciates a challenge from a stranger. All of us appreciate being challenged or corrected by people we know care about us deeply; people we know are doing this in our best interest, not just wanting to put us down because they have more influence or think they know more than we do. Challenge must be balanced by Celebration. Celebrate: When anyone among us, or anyone out there in the church world gets it right, we shall spare no effort or joy in celebrating their leadership. Church leadership is tough and lonely most of the time, so every success must be celebrated regardless of where it happens. Also, the world out there sees us mostly as different camps. Imagine the message we communicate when different churches start celebrating what other churches are doing! THE VEHICLES So, to pull off those five Cs, we intend to use three main vehicles. 1. Transform, The Leaders Gathering: We hope to gather leaders for initially a one day event to converge and have some initial conversations on our health and the health of the church, exploring pathways to better health. We are targeting to gather at least 200 leaders for this event. 2. The Monthly Conversations: These have already been going on for two years. We hope that many of the leaders who come for the Gathering will see the fruit of the conversations from the testimonies of those who have been and will sign up. The target is to get 40 leaders commit to the conversations. This is where the real relationships develop and connections between leaders take root. 3. The Retreat: We shall once a year retreat to relax, reflect, recharge, and renew our focus as to what God has called us to be and do. This is a place for even deeper connections among those who will be a part of the conversation. Those who are married will have to come with their spouses for the maximum benefit. We hope to get up to 20 couples. HOW CAN YOU BE A PART OF THIS? Participate: If you are a leader in the spheres of church, business, government or the social sector, we invite you to be a part of this transformational move. You can sign up for the Leaders’ Gathering 2014. We have created a Facebook Event where you can register. We have room for different leaders to participate in facilitating this event as well. Write to me or call to be a part. Mobilize: You may know of some other leaders who would benefit from this space of learning and forming great personal and ministry relationships. You can ask them to register for the Leaders’ Gathering by going to the Facebook Event and registering. You could sign up to be a focal point person in this. Sponsor: As an individual, a ministry or a business, you can help us make this dream a reality by giving some money. There will be a registration fee for The Leaders’ Gathering, but it will only cover meals. All other costs like materials, honoraria, venue and logistics are going to come from our sponsors. Given that our audience are leaders who have multiplied influence, every brand that’s part of this will get incredible mileage. It will cost us up to 82,000UGX per leader for The Gathering (16,400,000 total) and 600,000UGX per couple for the retreat (12,000,000 total).
