Dear Villagers, Uzazi Village is in dire need of financial donations. Please consider making a donation today from our website donation page: uzazivillage Dear Friends, On behalf of Uzazi Village, I would like to reach out to you as a valued community member to share our mission, purpose, and the many new and exciting developments of our nonprofit organization. Uzazi Village is dedicated to addressing crucial maternal-infant health disparities (breastfeeding initiation & duration, prematurity and low-birth weight infant rates, infant mortality rates, and access to quality healthcare, etc.) that exists in the urban core of Kansas City, MO. Since its inception in April 2012, Uzazi Village has: 1) Established a location of operation; 2) Created a peridoula training program “Sister Doulas” for women within the community; 3) Provided breastfeeding education classes and the “Chocolate Milk Café” breastfeeding support group; 4) Community friendly yoga classes; 5) “Birth Boot Camp” classes for expectant parents; and 6) Uzazi Closet (bank of donated infant, child, and maternity clothing items and supplies). Due to the success of Uzazi Closet, we have expanded this program to weekly with free pregnancy testing available on site (this includes written confirmation of pregnancy by a registered nurse). In addition, we are excited to announce the availability of La Leche League breastfeeding support meetings that have introduced the first official African-American leaders in the history of the Kansas City area! Our Accomplishments this past year include: • The training of 12 Perinatal Doulas from our local community with the next class to start in ?. • We have loaned out 26 birth and breastfeeding educational resources from our library. • Uzazi Closet has served a total of 75 families from our clothing closet. • Our Executive Director (Sherry Payne) has presented her presentation, “Chocolate Milk Café: Community-Based Support for Low Income Urban African-American Women” at 10 Perinatal Conferences both locally and nationally, with our support group for African-American breastfeeding mothers serving as a national model. • Uzazi Village has hosted 3 fundraisers, 2 celebrations, 36 classes, 4 trainings, and 24 support groups. • We have received over 50 boxes and bags of donated clothing to distribute. • We collected and gave away over 25 dozen diapers to families in our community. • We currently have 21 excellent volunteers whose time and efforts are priceless As you know, the costs of supporting programs that provide services to our target community require various resources (both financial and service-related). We are appreciative of any efforts that could be contributed and realize that the precious gift of those resources is paramount to the overall success of Uzazi Village. At this juncture in our organizational journey, the status of our 501c3 application is pending. We do not have the ability to offer tax deductions for clothing/supplies, volunteer hours, and/or monetary donations at this time. However, upon receipt of our 501c3 designation, follow-up notification will be sent so that all future contributions may be eligible for tax deduction. For more information, we invite you visit our website: uzazivillage. Once again, thank you for time and consideration. Sincerely, Latasha L. Reed, RN BSN President, Uzazi Village “For every mother, a healthy baby For every baby, a healthy village”
