Dear Wellesley siblings, I am writing this message to share the reason behind my choice to not run for Multicultural Affairs Coordinator at Wellesley this spring (for the upcoming 2014 - 2015 year). I recently reached a conclusion on whether or not I was going to run and I felt it necessary to share this decision publicly given my position as a runner-up in last year’s election and my continued involvement with the Community Action Network as the student chair for the Ethnic Studies Conference. I am posting this letter via social media in order to get this message out as soon as possible and I welcome anyone to share this letter in other channels to best serve your organization’s or community’s needs. Throughout my Wellesley career, I have searched for ways to build my entrepreneurial skills through working for my passions and there has been a lesson each and every time along the way -- from my video project on the Multicultural Studies Requirement reform initiative as part of Education 115 to building a culture for making change within the Community Action Network with Core to being part of the first spoken word group on campus with peers to supporting a dynamic movement for expanded Ethnic Studies, inclusive of Latin@ Studies and Queer Studies. These projects taught me about pioneering, building teams, navigating through Wellesley, trial and error, fostering creativity and, pursuing passions. They served my passions for intellectual curiosity, creativity and, activism and beyond that, gave witness to the depth and wealth of opportunities outside of the classroom. We have found ways to create communities and spaces on campus that are dynamic, thought-provoking and, mutually uplifting in powerful ways and, for that, I am grateful for the support that I received and given. I have found a similarly uplifting space within Team Jossle at Jossle, LLC. The team’s drive and passion to grow and develop the company as rapidly and strategically as possible are central to our work and vision. Over the past year, I gained an unprecedented opportunity to use and build a fuller spectrum of entrepreneurial skills while working towards that collective vision. I transitioned from working as the Wellesley College Jossle Partner to working as the Vice President of Business Development in the process. I have the opportunity to continue with Jossle, LLC and I am choosing to do so. I understand that my choice to continue will limit the amount of time and energy that I will have available next year. The Multicultural Affairs Coordinator position requires time, energy and, commitment that I will not be able to provide due to my role at Jossle, LLC. For this reason, I will not be campaigning for this College Government position this spring. I look forward to next year’s Multicultural Affairs Coordinator continuing the behind-the-scenes work that the position requires and collaborating with their core team to work within our community to the best of their abilities. From my perspective, this year is defined by active innovation and creative drives as seen through the Ethnic Studies Conference, the Latin@ Studies Minor movement, the first TEDxWellesley, the first company-sponsored Hackathon, increased spoken word events, a student-led International Women’s Day celebration, creating a more inclusive student monologues show at Wellesley, the inaugural Black Excellence Gala, innovative poster campaigns, expanding the conversation on mental health and, many others. We have the capacity to make change on campus and address collective concerns alongside community-specific causes and I am sincerely looking forward to all that will come. There’s a strong foundation to build upon and enough people willing to work towards change to really drive and inspire meaningful change on campus. In closing, I am indescribably grateful for all that I learned and practiced through engaging with our community over the past two and a half years. I am honored, humbled and, excited to have had chances to work in collaboration with creative and passionate peers, administrators and, faculty from our community. I sincerely look forward to what the next Multicultural Affairs Coordinator and the core team will build and create in collaboration with our community. Sincerely, Luisa Luisa Sophia Reyes Class of 2015 | Wellesley College VP of Business Development | Jossle™
